Jeanne Carpenter is a cheese geek, but she didn’t start out that way. Raised on Velveeta on a family farm in Wisconsin, she discovered the beauty and flavor of true artisan and specialty cheeses while working with the Dairy Business Innovation Center, helping Wisconsin cheesemakers transition from crafting commodity to specialty cheese. Today, she works full-time as a cheesemonger for Metcalfe’s Market in Madison and is one of three American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professionals in Wisconsin. She writes for several magazines, and since 2006, has blogged for fun on all things cheesy at CheeseUnderground.com.
As more Americans demand to know where their food comes from, the role of a professional cheesemonger in a retail setting is growing. Jeanne Carpenter, specialty cheese manager at Metcalfe’s Market in Madison, shares the stories of artisan and specialty cheeses with customers daily, while cutting, wrapping and merchandising more than 300 cheeses from around the world.
